Nominations criteria
For each nomination, please review the award criteria and make either a written or video submission which meets the criteria:
- Written nominations should be between 50 and 500 words
- Video nominations should be no more than 3 minutes long
Tell us why the nominee is being nominated, giving specific examples (what happened, how, where, when and what was the outcome).
Include any examples you have of impact, outcome or change to show how your nominee has made a difference. In particular, tell us where your nominee’s work has reflected our university values and principles.
While nominations are not anonymous, the submissions will be anonymised for a fair judging process. Please avoid mentioning names or job titles where possible.
Greenwich Excellence Award
This award recognises individuals or teams who have achieved excellence in their work. It will celebrate those colleagues whose commitment achieves results which make a difference. The winner of this award will be inclusive, collaborative and impactful. Tell us about the work your nominee(s) does, why you think it achieves excellence and how it makes a difference. Include any examples of results and impact and/or how it has made a difference to people, partners or our university community.
Making a Difference Award
This award recognises individuals or teams who have championed and demonstrated their commitment to鈥痠nclusion at the university. Nominees will be colleagues who have built an inclusive environment or inspired others to look at the world differently. In particular, we want to hear about initiatives to champion diversity and equality that have been launched or had an impact on students and/or staff in the last year. Tell us what the work aimed to address, what form it took and how it has made a difference.
Working Together Award
This award recognises individuals or teams who have worked collaboratively to connect individuals or teams to make a real difference to our staff and/or student communities. Nominees for this award may have created and built innovative solutions to existing challenges or come up with new ideas for how to work more effectively together. Tell us how the collaboration came about, how it was developed and what happened as a result.
Mentor of the Year
Having someone to help and guide us can be hugely valuable. This award can be for a formally appointed mentor, or someone who has been a mentor to you more informally. The qualities in nominees for this category might include providing excellent support and advice, being able to listen actively and offer guidance constructively and effectively, providing challenges and encouraging you to think and act differently and above all helping you to deliver and achieve your goals. Give us some examples of the skills your mentor evidenced and what was achieved as a result of being mentored.
Extra Mile Award
This award recognises individuals or teams. We all know someone whose dedication to their work and colleagues shines through everything they do. This award is for a member of staff or a team who shows a positive way of working to succeed, and brings something different to the team. They could be someone who makes a difference to people every day and may not realise that they do, or they approach their work or nurture the progress of an activity and through this inspire others to achieve an outcome. Please tell us about the work of your nominee, how it contributes to your team and our university as a whole, and what it means to you and your colleagues.
Rising Star Award
This category recognises individuals who are going to go far. They may be at a relatively early stage of their career or have undertaken a career change, but they have the skills and aptitude to make a difference. Tell us about the work they do, the qualities they have that make them a rising star and how those qualities have translated into results.
Inspirational Leader of the Year
Different to the mentor category, this award is for the university leader who inspires us. Your nominee will demonstrate our university values in all that they do and challenge and drive those around them to do the same. They will be accountable for their work and supportive of others. They may come up with novel solutions to problems or have great skills at engaging with a wide range of people. Tell us about how they inspire you, give us some examples of why that matters and what has been achieved as a result of their work.
Outstanding Team of the Year
This team award is for a group within the university. They may deliver an important service to students, or have developed a procedure that’s behind the scenes but makes everyone’s work better connected or more efficient. Tell us about the team, the work they do and why it matters. Give some examples of projects or pieces of work they have delivered and the impact this has had.
Partner of the Year
Much of our work as a university couldn’t happen without our partners. These range from local schools and colleges to research organisations, community groups, businesses and industry. As we implement our Partnership Strategy, we will continue to grow how we work with organisations outside the university. For this award, please nominate a partner who has made a difference to our students or our staff. Their work may have directly or indirectly impacted upon us for the better or their values may align with our own. Tell us about the joint work underway with them, why you think they should be recognised and the way their work makes a difference.
Student Success Award
This award recognises individuals or teams who delivered on our commitments to student success. This might include their contribution to inclusive recruitment, enhancing student experience and support or securing strong graduate outcomes. Tell us about what work they have done to help achieve our ambitions for student success, and what the outcomes and impact of their contribution are.
Green Initiative Award
This award recognises individuals or teams who help to create a green and sustainable university. Supporting and acting responsibly on the green issues of today and tomorrow is crucial to our future success. Nominees for this award may have done significant work in minimising negative environmental impacts (directly for the university, or for wider benefit via their research) or increasing awareness and understanding of sustainable development among staff and students.
Impactful Research and Knowledge Exchange Award
This award is for the team or individual making a difference through impactful applied research and/or knowledge exchange work that has had significant economic, societal or social impact. The work may align with our values, be undertaken with partners or have achieved a successful funding bid, but whatever element of our RKE it reflects, it shows a positive impact. Please give examples of the work and how it helps us to deliver our university strategy.
VC Special Recognition Award(s)
These awards will be made by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane Harrington, in recognition of the individual or team who embodies our Greenwich values and has gone above and beyond to make a difference to our students, our staff or their colleagues in the University.
Terms and Conditions
- All staff on contracts (including short term, fixed term and permanent) are eligible to make a nomination, as well as receive one.
- Students, including placements students and internships students, are not able to make nominations or be nominated.
- Members of staff from GSU are not able to make nominations or be nominated.
- You can submit multiple nominations. Each nomination form is for nominating one team or one individual only. Please use a new form for each nomination.
- Nominations should be linked to one of the award categories. The university reserves the right to move a nomination to another category if appropriate.
- Nominations are not anonymous. The nominee(s) may be made aware of their nominator(s) and any submission made on their behalf. They may be contacted in order to provide additional information and validate information put forward.
- Please do not include any personal or confidential information in the submissions. The submissions may be shared with the nominee(s), with faculties or directorates within the university, or online after the Staff Awards.
- The university reserves the right to publicise the results.
- Please keep a copy of your submission for future reference. Due to the large number of nominations received each year, we will not be able to share the details of nominations with individuals afterwards.
- All staff are invited to attend the event, you do not have to be a nominee or nominator to attend. The event is only for our staff and the Partner of the Year nominees. The event is a celebration and a thank you for all staff.
