Jill Trinder is a Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education and Lead for Primary Mathematics in the School of Education in the Faculty of Education, Health & Human Sciences at the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ.  Her main responsibility is to lead and direct the taught input of primary mathematics across the QTS undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Since joining the University in 2013, Jill has taken on a range of leadership and teaching responsibilities.  These include module leadership across three programmes, Link Tutor for the Cambridge Teaching Schools Network SCITT, design and delivery of a maths Innovation Project for school maths leads on behalf of the South East Maths Hub, and Programme Leadership of the Primary Mathematics (Subject Specialist) PGCE.

On leaving school, Jill worked in Central London for a well-known property company, studied for a BA (Hons) in English and, later, trained as a Learning Mentor; working in a primary school in Bexley.  In 2005 she completed a PGCE at Southbank University and spent 8 years teaching across Key Stages 1 and 2 in a mainstream primary school with a provision for children with hearing impairments.  During this time, as a member of the school's Senior Leadership Team, Jill studied to become a DfE Primary Maths Specialist (MaST).

In 2013, Jill took up a post in teacher training at the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ where she completed her MA in Education (with Distinction).

In addition to her role in the School of Education, Jill has been awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of her teaching and leadership excellence and is now a member of the GOLD recognition panel assessing staff HEA award applications from across the institution.  Jill is an External Examiner for Winchester University, and a member of two committees for the Mathematics Association.  She also forms part of the South East Maths Hub Strategic Board.

Responsibilities within the university

    • 2015 - ongoing, Lead for mainstream primary maths provision. Responsibility for designing, leading and teaching provision across 5 Programmes: PG mainstream; PG Maths Specialist; Undergraduate, School Direct and Salaried School Direct routes in to teaching
    • May 2018 - ongoing. Working with the South East Maths Hub to design, lead and deliver a year-long Action Research Project with Mathematics Leads in partnership schools across South East London focusing on whole-school change by improving pedagogy in mathematics teaching with aspects of blended learning and a flipped classroom approach alongside face to face taught input; working with up to 35 schools since its inception
    • 2014 - ongoing, Lead for a cross-department level 6 undergraduate module. Coordinating the teaching team of 8 colleagues and working with other Module Leads to offer an enhanced level of support to students in their final year
    • 2014 , ongoing, Lead for level 5 undergraduate (non-QTS) module. Designing both the taught and on-line provision and coordinating a cross-faculty teaching team to provide clear guidance on routes into further study, training or employment after graduation. Organising yearly conferences for around 90 students with visiting speakers
    • 2015 - ongoing, Design and implementation of a suite of school-based training activities for ITE students to undertake during placement across partnership schools that build progressively and provide a deep understanding of maths pedagogy
    • May 2019 - ongoing, Link Tutor to the Cambridge Teaching Schools Network (primary and secondary SCITT).  I support and train tutors and approximately 100 trainees to supervise/undertake level 7 action research in their placement schools
    • September 2019 - ongoing, GOLD panel member responsible for assessing applications from University staff for Higher Education Academy teaching awards

Research / Scholarly interests

In October 2017, Jill presented her joint research into children's relationships with money at the 54th Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in New York City.

Jill regularly attends the Young Enterprise six-monthly financial education forums. In March 2018, she was invited to present my research to the Forum at Capital One Bank in central London.
