Entry requirements
An undergraduate (honours) degree at 2:2, or above, in a Built Environment subject such as, Civil Engineering, Construction, Surveying or Architecture.
Applicants without a degree that have relevant professional experience and membership of an appropriate professional body may be considered.
Applicants from other backgrounds may be considered.

How you will learn
Teaching
In a typical week, you will have lectures, seminars, and workshops which may include critiques to discuss your work with colleagues and tutors. Visiting lecturers will also be made available in each term for specialist lectures, workshops and tutorials. Theory courses will be taught alongside other master's programmes to encourage subject crossover and multidisciplinary views.
Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.
Class sizes
The typical student intake per year averages 20-30. Students also take part in shared/collaborative modules with students on other built environment course, providing a perfect opportunity to develop skills in group and teamwork. Numbers can vary more widely for modules that are shared between courses.
Independent learning
Outside of timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate time to independent study (around 8-10 hours per module per week).
Every module will involve further reading and research. You may also be expected to spend time preparing for classwork such as presentations and group discussions, and for assessed coursework and examinations.
You can use our Stockwell Street library and online resources to support you in these activities.
In addition, during the week you can also:

Overall workload
If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.
Assessment
Your assessment will include coursework, portfolio submission, presentations, reports and examinations. Each module has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some module may also include practice assessments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.
In each case you will be provided with feedback to help you monitor progress and improve your performance.

Careers and placements
Will I have a work placement?
The industrial placement is an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and experience you gain during your first year on the programme. You will engage with current industrial systems, processes, and practices, which contribute to your professional development in the sector.
How long is my placement?
An industrial practice placement should typically last 11 months, with a maximum of 48 weeks, and a minimum of 35 weeks (only if required by the student placement search process).
Mentors
You will also be allocated an academic mentor who monitors your written work. The academic mentor will engage with you to ensure your placement is running smoothly.
What sort of careers do graduates pursue?
This course is aimed at cognate individuals from built environment and architectural background seeking management and leadership roles within the construction, property and surveying practices industry. It also designed for mid-career people preparing to make the transition into the construction and property industries.
Do you provide employability services?
As well as support from the Faculty of Engineering and Science Placements Team, the University partners with an organisation that specialises in guiding students to secure an industrial practice placement. However, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to secure an appropriate placement. This could be with a local or international employer in a relevant industrial sector.

We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.
Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
Support from the department
All students on Built Environment courses with us get access to Microsoft Project and online.
As a master's student with us, you will be a member of a larger creative community. Joining societies such as will also help you network, build skills, and present new opportunities.
We also provide pastoral support throughout your studies. You will have a personal tutor and access to training in study skills, dissertation preparation, methods and ethics. You can also access advice on employability and careers.
