Aims
To equip students with a broad knowledge and understanding of violence. The course will consider different forms of violence from a range of different, but often inter-linking, perspectives. In exploring historical, gender, comparative and theoretical perspectives, the course aims to widen the understanding of violence, but also problematise the concept itself.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and explanations of violence.
2. Appreciate the complexity of the phenomenon of violence.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the prevalence and forms of violence.
4. Consider violence from different perspectives.
5. Compare and contrast different aspects of violence.
6. Identify the physical and psychological impact of violence from the perspective of both offender and victim.
Indicative content
Forms of violence; criminological theories of violence; gender and violence; alcohol and violence.
Teaching and learning activity
The students will be taught through a combination of lectures, online group work and workshops.
Assessment
Coursework: 50% weighting, 40% pass mark.
