Çï¿ûÊÓƵ guide to using public transport for travel at university. Learn how public transport operates in London.
London
London has excellent public transport. The Tube, London Overground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and bus services are all managed by Transport for London (TfL). You can plan your journey in London by using the TfL .
Rail journeys are divided into zones. Central London and destinations such as Leicester Square and Oxford Circus are in Zone 1. Stations close to the Greenwich Campus are in Zones 2 and 3 and stations close to the Avery Hill Campus are in Zone 4. The price paid for each journey will depend on the zone you are travelling to and from and the time of day. Services during peak times cost more. Peak hours are 6:30 to 9:30 and 16:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday excluding public holidays.
Buses do not use zones to determine the fare. A single trip is £1.50. Cash is no longer accepted (see Oyster cards below).

Oyster cards
TfL operates Oyster, a London-wide smart card to pay for travel on buses, Tube, DLR, train and ferry services.
Oyster is available 'pay-as-you-go' or as a pre-paid 'season ticket'. With pay-as-you-go, money is added to the card which is then deducted each time a journey is made. For infrequent travel this is best. Adult Oyster Cards are available from the Village Shop at Avery Hill Campus or any other outlet displaying the Oyster sign, and online from TfL. Or you can now use a bank card with 'contactless' technology instead of Oyster.
As a student if you are going to be a frequent user of public transport it's worth considering a Student Oyster Card. This is a discounted season ticket and can be purchased weekly, monthly or annually allowing unlimited journeys within the card's chosen zone(s). As part of the application process the university will need to verify your student status. Use the link above for further information.
Medway - Arriva bus travel discount
As a Çï¿ûÊÓƵ student you can save at least 70% off the cost of bus travel with Arriva throughout Medway and Kent. To get the offer you will need an Arriva Connect smartcard available from GK Unions at Medway Campus or Arriva. More information here.
